UPDATED 30 APR 2008 PLAINFIELD SCHOOL
In 1866, the first school for the Plainfield children was held in a house owned by George Ketchum about a mile north of Plainfield. The school was taught by H. M.
Swan, who was a local Methodist minister.
In 1867, Rev. H. M. Swan taught school in Charles Folk's General Merchandise Store.
In 1868, a new school house was built, located at 403 Center Street. Rev. H. M. Swan was the teacher.
In 1880, land was purchased on Main Street for a new Plainfield schoolhouse and a two-story building of four rooms was erected at a cost of $3,400. Three of
the rooms were used by the primary, intermediate and "Upstairs" grades. The fourth room was rented for
community gatherings.
In 1915, an addition of two classrooms was built on to the front of the schoolhouse at a cost of $5,000.
In 1916, the twelfth grade was added to the school.
October 1, 1928, the Parent Teachers Association was organized.
In 1937, a new brick addition was added on to the west of the school at a cost of $22,000. It included the
gymnasium, auditorium, assembly, library, "commerical room", stage and shower
rooms. It was dedicated on October 22nd, 1937. Also purchased more land for
athelic fields.
Fall of 1938 the first six-man football was played in Bremer county.
A Plainfield High School band was organized at the beginning of the 1938-1939 school year, by Harold Wooldridge bandmaster, with a membership of forty-one.
The first public concert was held in the latter part of April 1939.
School year 1940-1941, Kindergarten was added, there were 10 children this first year.
September 18, 1941, lights were installed at the football field for night football games.
November 3, 1941, School Hot Lunches started with Mrs. Lulu Zwanziger and Miss Edith Smith in charge.
July 1946, the school bought a second bus. The 36-passenger bus will serve the territory west of Plainfield. The
42-passenger bus purchased last year will continue to serve the area east of Plainfield.
In 1949, the softball diamond got lights installed and a fence put up.
In 1953, a two-story elementary wing was built along the east side, and north side of the gymnasium, directly north of the original wood school building. The two
rooms on the first floor directly north of the gymnasium was the shop, west side, and home economics room,
east side, with two upper grade class rooms on the second floor. Along the east were four grade school class
rooms, two on first floor and two on second floor. North of these was a one story kindergarten classroom.
In 1959, the Plainfield School awards contracts of $207,960 for a new high school addition. The district had approved a $230,000 bond
issue for the project. General construction contract with a low bid of $160,326 went to John G. Miller
Construction, Waterloo. This includes tearing down the old building. He also gave the school a compleation
date of November 15, 1959. The plumbing and heating contract went to Waverly Plumbing and Heating on a
low bid of $37,747. Grow and DeVoe, Cedar Falls, are the architects.

occupied the new
three story
addition. The top
two floors were
class rooms, and
the ground floor
included a
multi-purpose
room, kitchen and
administrative
offices.
On March 12, 1962, the school purchased more land on the west end of their property for athletic fields. The new football field was named "Meadows Memorial
Field" in memory of Plainfield's police officer, Bill Meadows, who was killed in the line of duty on January 23, 1961.
In 1964, the band room, wrestling room, west side of the gym and bleachers were added at a cost of $35,000.
In 1989, a new locker room addition was added to the northwest part of the school building at a cost of $135,000.
